Encanto. Review

Image
Have you seen Moana? Wasn’t it joyous. And all the songs!  So when it was announced that Lin Manuel Miranda is doing another cartoon for Disney I was super excited.  It is great watch it but don’t read further as I might SPOIL it for you …  196 So it’s a story about family with magical gifts that serve their community. I really felt all the Mirabel was feeling as in never being good enough for her abuela. Hit me right in the feels but then we were shown the story of abuela Alma…. And then I thought of people feeling Afghanistan last year …. And tears and tears run down my face…. And that abuala was actually recovering from trauma….  However like that picture of little Afghan girl skipping in airport in Belgium, this film is happy.   Gift is not magic gifts but gifts are family, people who you love. It’s just wonderful!  Music and animation just so good.  I saw some one else doing a review said that it was like “you be you” that’s also true. It’s about ...

Some days are just better

Image
Some days are just better than others and more eventful.  Good few weeks ago I had a really long work week, and on the way to work I found out via podcast that Guilty Feminist creator will be showing the film in Cardiff as part of the International Welsh Film Festival... I was however unsure, I really needed a bath and some well deserved rest but after talking to hubby who said “it’s a one off thing and will not happen again, you should go” so off I went. The film is called  Say My Name  and it is very very good. Strong adventurous female lead, fun story totally passes 6 laugh test and I even teared up at one moment. However it is unclear if more people will see it on the big screen. I never knew how complicated film distribution is. I have tweeted about it and got likes and retweets form creators and cast. I was so chuffed! Well still am, like this is my claim to fame!  Then after the world stanges Q&A I got to meet Deborah Francis-White, we chatted about the fi...

Wonderful Wonder Woman!

Image
I love a good superhero movie. Yes a lot of them are damn similar and but they do entertain and such. And this is point of cinema, provide escapism, entertainment and hopefully send a good message.  I am not much for DC universe, these films take them selves so damn seriously. Oh Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman (BVS:DOJ as no one calling it), I guess Sucide Squad was better of all them but still not without fault.... so to be perfectly honest I did not have much hope for Wonder Woman. But trailers look good, I didn't see much of them but it was... well there was something captivating about the teasers.    I was actually rather excited and would love to see WW on opening night but it didn't happen. Also I have listened to interview with Gal Gadot on Kermod and Mayo film podcast (whittertainment) and it made me happy. But then they read out some of the listeners review and the opinions were very split! From glorious  praise to calling it anti feminist. I am ...

Logan

Image
I finally went to see Logan last week...  ... Damn!  So let me start form the beginning. I enjoy X men franchise... but I haven't seen them all. I missed the Wolverine  and the X Men Apocalypse (from few summers ago). But unfortunately I have seen the last stand... it was poo.  But nether the less I do enjoy my superheroes with mutant flare.  I have heard good things about Logan. But also that it has very graphic violence and is a very different film to all the others... and weren't these people right! Good story telling, and truly heart breaking throughout. You know when you see a film where kids are in peril it is sad but when you are a parent and ... well I was in tears good few times.  It is also a good stand alone film. Like Fantastic beasts. You don't have to be invested into the universe. But you still can enjoy the film.  The young Dafne Keen is great, such a excellent performance from such a young actor.  Now t...

Another Day Of Sun! La La Soundtrack

Image
Have you seen La La Land? Well if you haven't you must have heard of it. And you heard all of that Oscar mishap and about the backlash against this wonderful picture.  In my opinion some films have an important message or important sorry to tell like say Hidden Figures, and others tell a great sorry but without a deep meaning. And I think the La La was hat film. I mean it was about not giving up and have integrity but mainly it was about relationship of Mia and Sebastian.    I think I didn't get warm fuzzing feelings about this movie due to crazy expectations I got after all the praise is the media...  But then I have started listening to soundtrack... like all the time! It is glorious! Uplifting and makes me think happy thoughts. We even had a little dance off my with little one to Another Day Of Sun... So basically I realised that I really enjoyed the film. Even if I didn't realise this straight away! It stays with you I guess...

Let us praise the strong women

Image
And may we be them and may we raise them!  I just have seen hidden figures. And what a treat of the film it is. I didn't know much of the actual story and frankly I didn't think much of it before.  It was truly fascinating. Especially since my gran taught math and I hate math.    The way these brilliant women been treated made me really sick and I also realise how privileged I am just of my slightly olive skin tone, I am still white.  How stupid it is to judge some one by they skin colour.  And as Janel Monae character put it it is something you cannot change! With all that strong will and super sass she is definitely my favourite heroine from this film. We just should be 1st!  I also truly loved Octavia Spencer character's determination to keep her girls working. When did we as women began to be so mean to each other. We should support each other and fight for each other. There are still plenty walls and ceilings for us to break down, we need to work ...

So.. can we just take a moment

Image
So please can we just all take a moment to appreciate how sexy this man is....  I finally went to see Rogue One. Yes once again late to the party. It left me very ... in love and heartbroken. And the very last scene. But I didn't cry. Like at all. Actually find this strange and hoping to see it again soon.  And now I have seen the Rogue One 3 times. Cried once. I still can't work out the relationship between the leads due to the general broodiness of Diego Luna's Cassian. Mhmm....

Moana, make way make way!

Image
If you are following me on twitter or Facebook you might know that last Sunday I took the child to see Moana. It is rate PG in UK so there are some scary moments but we have watched the songs in YouTube with bits from the film and little Egg didn't blink twice. But he loved the music.  Oh what a wonderful film it is. The child only lasted about 20mins. And there weren't many kids in the audience, which is strange for early showing on Sunday so I have to take his little wiggle bum out. It was very lucky I saw it before. This film is absolute beauty. Music, songs, colours and characters are wonderful! Oh and fun fact one of the composers and writers Lin-Manuel Miranda actually has Tony, Emmy, Pulitzer, Grammy and MacArthur Fellowship! What?! No wonder music and songs are so great! Even the BBC Women's hour said that they love Moana since she isn't a princess and has no love interest in the film.  I loved it because it tells a good story of love, courage, li...

Fantastics Beasts

Image
I was super lucky to have some cinema time just before the new year. I went to see Fantastic beasts and Moana. Moana will have her very own post later but for now let me tell you about the Fantastic beasts.  I know I was very late to see it, and managed to actually stay away from any plot spoilers too.    There were some nice twists in it.  I am glad this film came out now and not earlier. The special effects were truly special and the creatures were more than magical.  I truly admire the JK Rowling mind, to imagine all these creatures how they look and act. Put the entire universe together. Magic!   I am actually making my mother to read the Harry Potter books.  Oh that's another thing about the Beasts, it is totally independent film and I guess the book from HP story's.  personally I actually preferred this timeline, shiny roaring twenties in NYC. Beautiful costumes, oh I loved Queenie way to talk... "Oh honey..." she says...     and i...

Bad moms

Image
"Let's be bad moms" says Mila Kunis in this gem of the film in answer to the pressure of being this picture perfect mother, that bakes, cleans, helps with homework, works and also lost all her baby weight and always looks amazing... (and all this in one sentence!!) I would like to applaud, actually make like a one woman standing ovation, to all the people who made this film. This film feels real, about every day mumming struggles. I have to confess that good few times I wanted to clap or shout "You go girl!" during the film. Basically it is about mothers, PTA, schools, children and mama gang. With mainly female cast too. There are only few men in this film, and they do not have a center stage. One particular actor is there just to look very very good. And boy he is does this so well....  This film made me laugh so hard that I have cried and almost peed my self.  There is however some criticism about how Mila Kunis' heroine...

Whiskey Tango Tina Fey

Image
So I have left the boys few days ago and run away to see if the trailer of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was true.. It just looked so good.  And it was! I would highly recommend it. It is rather marvellous. The film is about the journalists in Kabul in the beginning to mid naughties. What they did and how they did it... It was very interesting, engaging and super funny. The lady across the aisle from me was laughing even louder than me.  Big koodos to Alfred Molina he was so evil... and so funny!  It made me think about a lot of things. Kym, Tina Fey's character, is very concerned about women's right.   How Taliban was, and is, oppressing women. How women are there to make home and bare children. How the same people years later shot an innocent girl into a head just because she wanted to study. In the final scene with the fixer/translator was I was almost sure he would say that his baby daughter's name is Malala.  This is the next film...

Getting the use of my unlimited card...

Image
It is hard to find time to do anything, cinema is one of my favourite thing to do. But now I actually have a new cinema buddy, in a way... my mother in law! We went to see Dad's army a while back and this Monday we went to see Eddie the Eagle. Dad's army was good, but Eddie the Eagle was better.  It was very uplifting, and that the victory isn't everything. Coming from Russia, it is relatively new notion to me! Basically it was great I really enjoyed it. Even with all the dirty jokes... that my mother in law took it on board and have been repeating the joke to me for two days! I left the cinema feeling rather happy! I also been to see Kung Fu Panda 3 and truly enjoyed it.  Almost cried like a big cry baby that I am. Actually that was also the day the boys stayed up at with my in laws. Now that was strange. I haven't been by my self, truly by my self, in well over 2 years (I wasn't alone, when I was pregnant either). it was rather sweet and with...

Marvel

Image
So the best way to celebrate your forth wedding anniversary is to do a 10K race, go to the cinema and go to 5 guys for a burger... Well you know all about the race  now I would like to tell about my second favourite instalment of Marvel Universe.  In case you are wondering the Guardians of the Galaxy is my favourite Marvel film! And I have seen it like 100 times!  So we after leaving the little man with Gramy we headed out to see Ant Man. All I knew is that Edgar Wright refused to direct it due to issues with Marvel but still did the story and such.. Oh and of course that Ant Man super power is to get really small. Well I got to say it was really cool and so much fun! We get to see the back story the new story. We got to see the no offence to anyone less important Avenger and we saw Agent Carter. Speaking of a lovely lovely Peggy Carter ( Hayley Atwell ) she has her own show Agent Carter. It's awesome, she's such a badass!! Big fan right now. Oh and i...

cinema how I love you

Image
Been to the cinema couple of times, saw very different films. Loved both of them.... A Little Chaos.  Alan Rickman directing and acting, he is Louis XIV busy being Roi Soiel and moving everyone to Versaille. Kate Winslet is a landscape designer helping out on that project while under the genius of Le Notre played by Matthias Schoenaerts. This film is just sooo good and you really feel for all the characters. Do watch it. It is magical and will make you smile. Oh and Stanley Tucci is divine in it. And then of course hubby insisted we go see Avengers Age of Ultron as soon as we can possibly can.  So Edgar was left with his Grampy while we scooted off to cinema to watch Avengers in all its 3D glory! Oh and Joss did not disappoint. Action was marvellous, loved the background into characters and introduction of the new ones. And it even had some funny moments!  "you all are not worthy!"  So yeah, two very different films. Costume drama ...

Woman in Gold

Image
It appears that I am not very familiar with work of Gustav Klimt... I suppose if I prefer the impressionist and Van Gough to anything else... well here are few of my favourite painting...  Starry night Van Gough 1889 Blue Dancers Edgar Degas Last day of Pompeii Karl Briulov Haystacks Claude Monet Yes I know it is very mainstream... and not original... oh and this one by August Renoir  But I also enjoy films about the art... Hated Girl with Pearl Earring by the way, but I loved Monument men and just been to see the Lady in Gold. (or maybe it is the only films about WWII I can watch?!) No matter what my favourite podcast said, well it wasn't Kermod's review so I would like another opinion, I truly enjoyed it! Dame Helen Mirren is just so believable.... but then I thought why did her character remained her Austrian accent, then it hit me, she still spoke German with her husband.... things like that took my mind off the Nazi...

very disappointing...

Image
Usually I enjoy the cinema... a lot. But every so often it's a miss, now it has been too often... I would like to tell you about Seventh Son... I am a massive fan of men with swords, magic, fantasy and similar things. I do like me some man candy, and frankly Ben Barns just gets me all so very happy. Not here he didn't.  (no matter he is still a major mancandy!!) It was just strange ... Good cast good effects and such but just not a good plot development... Just slow and moments when one think should be big for Herod they just don't react in the appropriate way.  And sorry to say but looks like Jeff Bridges plays the same character all over again, like in true grit and in RIPD, loner with drink trouble and he really needs to articulate!   I really wanted it to be good or at least engaging.... However, it got me interested in the actual novels it is based on. Add them to my list... So it was just disappointing... I may be wrong let me kn...

Goes great with cup of tea and a biscuit.

The grey demographics is a terrible term. But I think I never heard it used before, not until I listened to my favourite  wittertainment podcast  talking about The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The target audience for this film are older people... like for King's Speech. Oh I don't know about that. I suppose it is nice to know for film makers that there is a great big chunk of population will go an see this film. But why wouldn't younger people like it? Well maybe grey demographics are the target but not exclusively. I did enjoy the film, as much as I have enjoyed the 1st instalment of pensioners abroad. It was very heart warming. Trying to get my in laws to watch it too... Santa brought them a DVD of this film for Christmas. This one was a good follow up, all the oldies had them selves a new story in this film. It was nice to see the development and new turns in the characters' lives. Some critics and cinema goers said that it was too much g...

Home

Image
I went to see Home... The trailer for it looked ever so cute. Dancing alien, dancing purple alien!!! I didn't really pay much attention to the trailer to be perfectly honest and did not know much about the film. I was pleased that they didn't put every funny moment into the trailer. However it took me forever to pinpoint the voices...  Jim Parsons is fab and most people knows him as Sheldon Cooper. I love The Big Bang, even Milky Boy has a Bazzinga onesie. However his O character seems rather like Sheldon Cooper... but alien! I understand that the alien is written this way, but in a way seems that Mr Parsons been cast for his fame is Sheldon! But saying that I know that kids never seen BBT would enjoy Home!  Watching the movie all I could think of is why is there so much Rhianna songs... Then it hit me. Oh she is doing the voice for Tip. Don't know what the writer of this firm smoked to name his leading character Gratuity!!!  Yeah, I don't care for Rhian...

Angelina love or Maleficient

Image
We all knew that Maleficent will be good... it was long time in production and advertised to no end. And we all were aware that it is about the evil in Sleeping Beauty. Oh but was it? I really did not know what to expect... I though a dull Disney film. But I was wrong and very pleasantly surprised. The horrid evil act... Loss of wings... All men are evil said the film! and oh we believed that. But truly Angelina was a real star of this film. She was magnificent! I would really recommend it to everyone... Beautifully made, beautiful actors, dark and Gothic as we all know I'm a fan of that! Also I want these horns... and wings!!  Oh and loved how they have reinvented the true loves kiss, very much like frozen too the act of the pure heart the same way! Very cute and not traditional at all.

New

Image
I have started a new job... It took forever to find, and I would not say it is a dream job, but it's a nice full time position. It is really nice to be back in the hotels again. But I guess I still did not gave up on becoming a personal trainer. But not yet...  On that note... today I did an intensity class, it was actually so hard. I did not think that I can star jump with 5kg in each hand. God it was hard, I am actually a bit scared how I will be feeling tomorrow. But I also want to tell you about my obsession... Cassandra Clare and her Mortal Instruments books. I am obsessed! I cannot put my kindle down, work does really interfere with my reading. I am on the third book now. So as you know film is out and have been looking forward to it  and I actually already seen it twice. Thinking of it I might go see it the 3rd time. I think I actually formed an opinion about this film. I think it was the best what they could have done and actors are spot on... Ma...
